All fake sellers claim their items are 100% genuine. Dont be nieve!
Silver fakes are most common ie the "Return to Tiffany" or "1837" ranges, with heart or lock pendants. You will be getting rhodium plated cheap metals.
Be careful on wording. Tiffany is a generic style of ring. Check with the seller their goods are Tiffany & Co.
Check the Tiffany & Co price for your goods against the prices on offer. If it is too good to be true, then it's fake. Especially if they have sold a lot of items in that price range.
If they come with lots of new blue boxes and bags, alarm bells should be ringing. Old goods with new packaging?! It's a good trick.
Dont buy anything which doesn have an actual picture of the goods. Some sellers put up a picture from the Tiffany & Co website. The ring could be damaged, tampered, or even engraved with a personal message (I know from bad experience!)
Dont just rely on feedback. Remember that many people buying these fakes either KNOW they are buying fakes, or dont realize until after they have left feedback.
A great tip
Poor fakes can be spotted through the "&" of Tiffany & Co." If you write this symbol, it ends (or begins) in the middle. Tiffany goods have this exactly in the middle vertically. Poor fakes dont. Check the Tiffany & Co website, then have a close look at some on Ebay.
Certification
Avoid 'vintage' goods unless you are particular collector of them. Tiffany cannot verify the authenticity of goods which claim to be from the 1930s etc. Fake sellers know this. Antique is pre 1900!
Original rings come with a leather bound certificate identifying the specifications of the ring. Ask what happened to it. Check pictures of goods on Ebay which do offer these so you get to know what they should look like. Good owners hang on to everything. Dodgy sellers dump the certificate so they can offer their 'own' specification or try and get a more favorable GIA rating. Be aware that the USA GIA system is different from that used by Tiffany.
Note that sellers, whether a shop or an individual, often slightly exaggerate the specification of rings. They know buyers might not realize, and are unlike to complain even if they find out. How many people are going to pay for a further valuation? A 0.3CT F VVS1 can become a 0.26CT H VS1. Individually, the slight variations are not very significant, but combined they add up to a significant difference in value.
Some seller tamper with rings eg putting in a larger non-Tiffany diamond into a real Tiffany & Co ring setting. Check the photos and look for any signs of bending of the prongs holding the gemstone.
Tiffany & Co can give you a valuation on modern goods checking against their 'records of sale'. In the UK it's the Bond St branch, for £100.
Returns
Check the returns policy. Contact seller before buying and say that you have had previous problems with people selling fakes, and had to seek a refund and report the seller of fakes to Ebay. If the person is selling fakes, you will get an interesting email back! Some fake sellers do actually own up and suggest you buy somewhere else.
Check their postage costs. Would you send a high value item without insuring it? If they dont offer insurance, smell a rat.
