An award winning designer and instructor, Gabor’s goal is to guide clientele and nurture students as to how strategic design and visual communications can make a difference in the world. An industry member for more than 28 years, Gabor currently is a principal at the strategic design and branding firm Salvato, Coe + Gabor. He has been published and awarded by Print magazine, Communication Arts magazine, How magazin Columbus Society of Communicating Arts, and others. Philip GarrettPhilip R. Garrett, assistant professor, cinematic arts; teaches collaborative projects, digital cinema, video production, visual narrative and storyboarding, media design, and senior portfolio. Garret is a producer, director, writer, editor and video artist. His professional experience includes live action, animation, studio and independent motion pictures, theatre, documentary film, experimental film, visual effects, commercials, and studio experience with DreamWorks SKG Animation and DisneyToon Studios. His films have screened at festivals, received distributions, and garnered awards internationally. BBA in management information systems, Ohio University, 1992; MFA, Ohio State University, 2012.
Tom GattisTom Gattis, dean of the School of Design Arts and professor, industrial design; teaches sponsored projects and studios. Gattis’ industry experience includes work as a designer and project manager in the nuclear industry. He also worked as an account executive in the trade show and exhibition industry and was a professional model maker. A former professor at Savannah College of Art and Design, Gattis spends his spare time as a wooden boat builder and master wood turner. He is a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America, the American Craft Council, and the American Association of Woodturners. Jason GiancolaJason Giancola, adjunct instructor, liberal arts; teaches introductory sociology. As a social scientist, Giancola’s current research interests focus on inequalities, system characteristics, tracking, and multiculturalism within the education system. His prior research investigated topics surrounding national and transnational identity, citizenship, migration, xenophobia, and ethnicity. Giancola has been teaching at CCAD since spring 2011. Besides teaching, his hobbies include black-and-white photography, exploring graphic design elements, creating his own pottery and traveling the world. BA in visual and communication arts, Franklin College Switzerland, 2006; MA in cultural sociology, Griffith University in Australia, 2009.
Nicole GibbsNicole Gibbs, adjunct instructor, fine arts and foundation studies; teaches design, sculpture, and ceramics. Gibbs' multi-disciplinary works have been exhibited throughout the United States. She is a 2012-13 delegate to the U.S.-Japan Leadership Program and has presented lectures at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and Southeastern College Art Conference. She previously taught at Evergreen State College in Washington and Ohio State University and worked at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Museum of Contemporary Craft in Oregon. BA in painting and art history, Hamline University, 1998; post-baccalaureate in ceramics, Oregon College of Art & Craft, 2006; MFA in sculpture, Ohio State University, 2009.
Thom Glick, adjunct instructor, illustration; teaches various illustration courses and workshops and also in CCAD’s Continuing & Professional Studies and College PreView programs. In addition to teaching, lecturing, and recruiting for CCAD, Glick is a freelance illustrator, producing traditional and digital-based artwork for commercial clients, galleries and private collectors. He has received awards for his editorial work, and his commercial and personal work has been selected for display in various domestic and foreign gallery shows, some of which were juried. BFA in illustration and art history, CCAD, 2004.
Vicki Golden, assistant professor, illustration and advertising and graphic design; teaches electronic publishing techniques and illustration online portfolio. Golden has a strong background in digital design, social media, computer instruction, and a passion for all things type. Her freelance clients include Express, Lane Bryant, and Zaner-Bloser. She regularly donates her time and talents to area nonprofit organizations and recently was awarded a grant to attend the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee to further her interest in traditional and digital media combination. She received CCAD’s 2008 Award for Teaching Excellence. BFA in illustration and advertising and graphic design, CCAD, 1996.
Irina Grebennik-Babcock, adjunct instructor, fashion design; teaches fashion design layout, fashion design illustration, and surface design. Grebennik-Babcock has extensive knowledge in textile dyeing, media resist techniques, painting, and printing. She has been a technical assistant for Express and freelance designer for Justice, and has developed trademark, logo, and visual marketing for Longaberger. Her professional work also includes product development for Freedom Jeans. With proficient hand- and machine-sewing skills, Grebennik-Babcock has done tailoring and draping work for Riffe Gallery, Saks Fifth Avenue, and David’s Bridal. BFA in arts and English elementary education, Vladivostok Pedagogical College #1 in Russia; BFA in fashion design, CCAD, 2002; MEd in instruction and computer education, University of Phoenix, 2011.
Carol Griffith, professor, fine arts; teaches painting, watercolor, and color theory. Griffith has exhibited nationally and won top awards from the Ohio Arts Council, Butler Institute of American Art, and the Ohio State Fair. Multiplicity of views, a sense of place, and political themes all play a role in her work. Griffith’s work is in the collections of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Huntington Bank building, Ashland University, and Carnegie-Melon University. David Groff, adjunct professor, illustration; teaches illustration studio concepts and practices. Groff has worked as a freelance illustrator for more than 25 years, for clients including Cartoon Network, Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, the NFL, Fox Sports, and The Walt Disney Co. His work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrations in New York and Los Angeles, the Aster Awards, New York Art Director’s Club, Print Magazine, and Communication Arts. Daniel Grose, adjunct instructor and lab manager, photography; teaches photography courses. Grose has exhibited work at Acme Art Co., Ohio State Fair, Mpx Gallery, Dragonfly Annex, 2Co’s Gallery, Gallery 853, and Schumacher Gallery. BFA in photography, CCAD, 1992; MFA in photography, Ohio University, 1994.
Robin Gulcher, adjunct instructor, cinema arts; teaches sound design. An audio professional for more than 40 years, Gulcher has worked in sound studios, on concert stages and in the field. He currently is an owner of Magnetic Studios, an audio production and post-production house whose clients include advertising agencies, production companies, independent filmmakers, and businesses. He founded Circa Music, now a spin-off company that originally provided production music to Magnetic Studios. Gulcher counts among his career highlights recording the Count Basie Orchestra for Kawai pianos. He is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Audio Engineering Society.
Joel Gundlach
Joel Gundlach, professor, industrial design and interior design; teaches industrial design studio, concept drawing, and furniture design. At CCAD since 1989, Gundlach has taught various industrial and interior design courses. Prior to joining CCAD, he was an associate designer at Ellies Design Group. Gundlach also is a freelance furniture designer and maintains an active practice designing and fabricating custom residential and commercial furniture and restoring antique wooden boats. His clients include the Columbus Foundation, the Columbus Museum of Art, New Albany Elementary and High School, Columbus College of Art & Design and many residences in the Ohio area. Chris Harman, adjunct instructor, foundation studies and fine arts; teaches design and glassblowing. Harmon has exhibited his work across Ohio and sold his glassware nationally. He has demonstrated at the National Heisey Glass Museum in Newark and the Franklin Park Conservatory and has provided private instruction at Glass Axis in Columbus. After attending workshops at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, Harman was invited in 2009 by Hiroshi Yamano to do a three-month residency at Ezra Glass Studio in Japan. Andrew Havens, adjunct instructor, advertising and graphic design; teaches advertising history, marketing and introductory business. With more than 20 years marketing experience, Havens attempts to bring together different pieces of the marketing picture—detail and strategy, creativity and business, design and words. He has worked in retail marketing, business-to-business, and the nonprofit sector and is currently the branding and creative services manager at OCLC. Havens is the co-author of Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World, a book-length research report on the use of social networking and social media among librarians and the general population. Hiroshi Hayakawa, associate professor, photography, foundation and graduate studies, and honors program; teaches photography, material studies, and drawing. Born and raised in Japan, Hayakawa works mostly in alternative photography, mainly liquid emulsion; kinetic sculpture, and paper craft. Hayakawa is an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship recipient and is represented by Sherrie Gallerie. His publications include Kirigami Menagerie, Kirigami Animals, and Paper Pups. Christine Cooper Hill, adjunct instructor, fine arts; teaches jewelry and small scale metals. Hill has worked in the manufacturing and custom jewelry design profession since 1987, including at Columbus-based Diamond Cellar. She started her own jewelry studio business in 2007 and designs clean lines of jewelry that reflect her own interests and aesthetics. Michele Hill
Michele B. Hill, associate professor, psychology, and coordinator of social sciences; teaches psychology and art therapy. Hill is a licensed psychologist specializing in traumatology and health psychology. She was a fellow professor at the University of Northwest in Mmabatho, South Africa and has engaged in international counseling and infrastructure development. She has received multiple teaching awards, published in peer-reviewed journals, and presented at international conferences. Hill previously taught at Georgia State University and University of North Georgia. BFA in illustration from CCAD, 1987; MS in professional counseling, Georgia State University, 1995; PhD in counseling psychology, Georgia State University, 2000.
headshot of ccad faculty helen hoffeltHelen Hoffelt, professor, photography and graduate studies; teaches photography, photosensitive materials, and photo projects. Hoffelt’s work has appeared in numerous national and international exhibitions and in multiple publications including Photography Quarterly and Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Art. She has received multiple awards including a grant from the Mark Diamond Research Fund. She previously taught at State University of New York and Montana State University and was a visiting professor in 2009 at Studio Arts Center International in Italy. Anne HolmanAnne Holman, adjunct instructor, fine arts; teaches jewelry and small metals. For more than five years, Holman has been selling jewelry full-time at boutiques, galleries, and art festivals nationally and internationally as well as online. She uses recycled precious metals and reclaimed antique objects as part of her green studio practice. Her work has been published in The New Artisans: Handmade Designs for Contemporary Living, Lark Studio Series: Pendants, Crafty Superstar, 500 Pendants & Lockets: Contemporary Interpretations of Classic Adornments and in multiple wedding publications. Eric Homan
Eric Homan, assistant professor, cinematic arts and animation; teaches video and motion graphics. Homan has received several awards for his work, including a 2001 Telly Award for his computer animation piece Life Forms. His documentary films include Treasures of the Hocking Hill, David Hostetler: Artist in Nature, Comic Book Culture, Artcars, and Hope & Strength: Life After Miscarriages. He has exhibited multiple times at the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition.
