A M Y   K A H N   R U S S E L L transforms an exotic blend of cultural heritages and nature's beauty into contemporary jewelry design. She is widely known as a forerunner of the naturalistic trend in one-of-a-kind jewelry. A fine arts graduate of Tulane, the artist's personal studies and experience often influence her designs, reflecting on visions from museums or images seen during her extensive travels. Many of the rocks and minerals she uses are not only mined just for her but also cut for her specific design requirements. Drawing upon her fine art sculptural background she also incorporates one-of-a-kind ethnic and Asian pieces gathered in her travels.
Biography - Amy Kahn Russell has a BFA degree from Tulane University and has done post-graduate work at Exeter college of Arts in england, LSU and the University of Houston. In the course of her career she has founded a wholesale manufacturing company and managed fine jewelry stores. She now lives and works in Connecticut with her family.
Exhibtions/Collections - Amy's designs have been exhibited in the Natural history museum, American Craft Museum, Smithsonian institution and Asia Society, as well as ACC and other craft shows. The collection has been featured in Vogue, Essence, Mirabella, Mademoiselle and Glamour magazines. Collectors of her work have incuded Iman, Madonna, Halle Berry and Mary McFadden.
Amy's work was featured in the Autumn 2005 issue of Ornament magazine, as follows:

  FUSION JEWELRY ARTIST
Her agenda is wonderfully ambitious. Some of her pieces are bold and brash, yet she also produces smaller scale jewelry for the more conservative customer. More significant to her growth as a jeweler, Russell absorbed the art and culture of her surroundings, falling in love with temples and complex carvings. She also became a collector and remains one to this day. In creating an ornament Russell begins by arranging various elements on a worktable, moving them around, eventually taping them is place. “It’s a question of colors and shapes,” she says. Another specialty of this multi-threat jeweler consists of necklaces made from many strands of beads in different colors. A recent piece features handcarved vesuvianite with peridot, freshwater pearls and citrine, all bezel-set on a clasp.
As a young girl I often spent time making things, drawing and assembling projects without instructions. I come from a line of craftspeople, artists and photographers and have always been encouraged to create.  My love of jewelry began with a spool of aluminum wire in High School that led to my first line called ‘Lobes.’ I went on to college to study Fine Arts in Chicago. Later, I learned metalsmithing at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle.
For the past 7+ years I made one of a kind Fine Art Jewelry for Facere Jewelry Art Gallery and other Galleries.  This past spring I embarked on a new line of jewelry designed using organic forms set with photographs that I have taken during my travels or from my image collection. I love seeing the story that takes shape when the two are combined.
I find inspiration from my love of organic forms, color and image. I visit a community garden in my neighborhood often for inspiration and to take photographs.
I build the originals by hand and then have them cast locally with a company that uses mostly recycled sterling silver. I fabricate all of my clasps and ear wires by hand.  I also transfer the photographs myself to polymer clay to give the images depth and versatility. They are then coated in a layer of polymer for durability
If you love photography or have images you want to use in your jewelry, image transfers onto polymer clay is a simple and affordable method to incorporate them into your work and can be done easily at home. This class will cover one basic type of transfer technique using a transfer paper and Sculpey Premo. Other techniques will be discussed and time permitting students will have the option to try other systems. We will also discuss a variety of ways to use transfers in your work including cutting, setting and different options for protecting the surface. We will discuss equipment you will need should you choose to pursue this in your home studio. A basic understanding of working with polymer helpful.
Although her fascination with Jewelry Design was evident at the tender age of six, Nanz Aalund’s first recognized jewelry piece was a silver pendant that won her a “Gold Key” Scholastic Art Award in high school. She continued her training by serving an apprenticeship in Chicago and receiving her BFA in Jewelry Arts from Northern Illinois University. Throughout her career Nanz traveled to Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, San Francisco, and New York to study jewelry design and manufacturing. After a successful career in jewelry design, Nanz completed her MFA in metalsmithing at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Nanz Aalund taught jewelry and metals classes at the University of Washington under Mary Lee Hu and at the Art Institute in Seattle. She served as a fine jewelry designer and consultant for Nordstrom, Rudolf Erdel, Neiman Marcus, and Tiffany & Co. and as the associate editor for Art Jewelry magazine.
